From Basics to Mastery – Why Fundamental Exercises Matter
A lot of people think they need fancy programming or some expensive doo-dad, but at the end of the day even though I’m a gym owner, I’m telling you that a lot of progress and results can be had by just a couple basic exercises. Community? Accountability? Maybe not. But you CAN get healthy and get great results by just intentionally incorporating a couple basic exercises; fundamental exercises like squats, deadlifts, and push-ups. These movements are essential because they mimic natural patterns of motion, making them functional and applicable to everyday activities. By mastering these basics, you lay a solid foundation for advanced exercises and overall fitness.
The Power of Squats
Did you know that squats engage nearly every muscle in your legs and core? This compound movement not only builds strength but also improves balance and flexibility. Squats can boost athletic performance and make daily tasks like lifting and climbing stairs easier. At CFT, we are going to squat every single week, it’s non-negotiable. It’s such a beneficial exercise that I would consider neglecting them to be irresponsible.
The Benefits of Deadlifts
Similarly, deadlifts work multiple muscle groups, including your back, glutes, and hamstrings, promoting better posture and reducing the risk of injury. This powerful exercise is a key player in building a strong and resilient body. At CFT we are going to do variations of the deadlift, exercises that elicit a similar stimulus without just staying at the basic deadlift. For instance, we will do Kettlebell work (Swing, Sumo-Deadlift High-Pull, Russian, American, and Deadlift), Dumbbell Deadlift, Cleans, Snatch, etc. That way you’re mixing up the weight, reps, intensity, and keeping things fresh so you can stay motivated.
Push-Ups or Bench press
Push-ups and bench press are both excellent for building upper body strength. Push-ups target the chest, shoulders, triceps, and core, making them a comprehensive workout in one simple move. They require no equipment, can be done anywhere, and can be modified to suit any fitness level, from knee push-ups for beginners to more challenging variations for advanced athletes.
The bench press, on the other hand, allows for greater load-bearing, which can significantly enhance muscle growth and strength. Just like the push-up, it primarily works the chest, shoulders, and triceps but also engages the stabilizing muscles in your back and core. This is more ideal for those looking to build significant upper body strength and muscle mass and, ironically enough, those who don’t have the strength to do a full-body push-up just yet. Consider starting with 5lb or 10lb Dumbbells, then eventually work heavier and up to a barbell. Then, if comfortable, start adding plates. Be sure to use a spotter. Both exercises complement each other, with push-ups offering versatility and endurance, and the bench press providing power and hypertrophy.
Why Mastering Basics Enhances Overall Fitness
Mastering these basic exercises enhances overall fitness by developing muscle strength, endurance, and coordination. When you have a strong foundation, it's easier to learn and perform more complex movements safely and effectively. This progression helps prevent injuries and ensures long-term success in your fitness journey.
