From Doubt to Determination: Mike Pender’s Journey to the CrossFit Games

This past weekend, I had the incredible experience of coaching Mike Pender, one of our CrossFit Trussville athletes, through his first CrossFit Games in the 70+ division. Competing at the Games is a dream for many, and Mike not only made it but executed each workout with precision, determination, and heart. I couldn't be prouder of him, our coaching staff, and our entire community, who rallied around Mike every step of the way—from the early days of training to the final event on the competition floor.

Here’s Mike’s story, in his own words:

Mike began his journey at the CrossFit Open, where he performed well enough to advance to the Quarterfinals. He found himself in a new box with a judge who had worked the Games, and through a combination of strong performances and “mediocre” scores, as Mike humbly put it, he received the invitation to the Games. But that’s when the real battle began—not with the weights or the workouts, but with self-doubt.

When Mike first came to me, he wasn’t sure he was worthy of competing at the Games. Despite the support from everyone at CrossFit Trussville, he struggled to believe he belonged. We started with a simple plan: technique work twice a week, focusing on his strengths and making small adjustments. But the biggest task was getting Mike to trust the process, and in turn, trust himself.

At first, Mike tried to outwork his doubt by hiring another coach and increasing his training load, but it became clear that more wasn’t better. It wasn’t until he simplified his approach and embraced the training plan that things began to click. By the time the Games arrived, Mike was prepared, both physically and mentally.

Mike’s account of each workout shows the depth of his journey—from narrowly missing the start of his first event to nailing the strategy on his final front squat. He recalls every detail, not just for his own reflection but to honor the community that supported him.

CrossFit Trussville is more than a gym; it's a family. We push each other, we lift each other, and we celebrate each other's victories, no matter how big or small. Mike’s story is a testament to what can be achieved with the right mindset, the right coach, and the right community.

To anyone inspired by Mike's journey, remember: it takes a village, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. If you're ready to start your own journey, reach out to us at CrossFit Trussville. Let's see what we can accomplish together.
